Arizona specialty courts, also called problem-solving courts, are trial courts set up for the primary purpose of treatment for non-violent offenders.

These courts are based on need. Specialty courts are geared toward recovery and seek to promote positive outcomes for the offender, victim, and society as a whole.

(Please note that these are categories of courts and a court may have a different name in its court system.)

Types of Specialty Courts
  DRUG COURT   DUI COURT
Drug courts are an alternative to traditional criminal court. These courts usually include a team which consists of a judge, prosecutor, defense lawyer, probation officer, and treatment provider. Together, they create treatment plans, incentives, and punishments that will lessen the offender's relapse and drug dependence.   DUI courts handle defendants who have been convicted of driving under the influence charges. They incorporate increased supervision and monitoring by the court, the adult probation department and treatment providers as part of the coordinated strategy to intervene with repeat and high-risk offenders.
  VETERANS TREATMENT COURT   HOMELESS COURT
The goal of veterans court is to rehabilitate and restore veterans as active, contributing members of their community. This court creates and supervises treatment plans to address the underlying causes of the veteran's behavior and substance abuse issues.   Homeless courts help people resolve legal matters that may present a barrier to life on the streets, employment, and driving privileges. This court is designed to resolve outstanding minor misdemeanors, victimless offenses, and warrants for individuals experiencing homelessness.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COURT   ANIMAL  WELFARE COURT
Domestic violence courts focus on the needs of the community as it relates to domestic violence and the victims of domestic violence offenses. It provides a collaborative approach to promoting victim safety and reducing recidivism.   Animal welfare court is a problem-solving court that addresses and provides a specialized treatment for defendants accused of more serious misdemeanor offenses involving animal abuse or repeat offenders charged with animal-related offenses.
  COMMUNITY COURT   MENTAL HEALTH COURT
Community courts assist in connecting community members with services that can address their needs and help them move out of the criminal justice system. Community court enhances public safety through criminal justice and community collaboration to ensure offender accountability through appropriate and meaningful behavioral health interventions.   Mental health courts serve participants experiencing a mental health condition. It provides frequent judicial oversight, uses a team-based approach regarding treatment and supervision, and is evidence-based in its application of treatment, supervision, incentives, and sanctions.
